“After PIPOL 3”

PIPOL3 : Three Issues

The third European Encounter of the Freudian Field, PIPOL 3, under the title ‘Psychoanalysts in Close Touch with the Social’, was held on 30 June and 1 July. This encounter was an important moment for bringing psychoanalysis up to date. We owe to Judith Miller, President of the Freudian Field, this tipping point which is going to leave indelible traces on our practice. This event aroused our best interest since PIPOL, the International Programme of Applied Psychoanalysis of Lacanian Orientation, is a major support for introducing psychoanalysis into the countries of the NLS. The teaching to be drawn from this Encounter revolves around three issues: a political issue, a clinical issue, and an issue concerning the training of the psychoanalyst.

The political issue

Where sometimes we used to be discreet, today it is a question of openly rivalling a Politics of Things, so as to re-establish the force of the subject and his failure. This is the sense I give to what Jacques-Alain Miller said at the close of PIPOL 3: ‘When the analytic locus migrates towards the institution, the truth is laid bare’. In other words, we were always ‘in direct contact with the social’ in clandestine fashion, but the creation of the CPCTs, their work and that of other institutions of Lacanian orientation, is allowing the efficacy of the psychoanalytic operation to be demonstrated, and is bringing its direct contact with the social out into the open unshielded. The enthusiasm and good mood of this Encounter are doubtless testament to a certain effect of the undoing of repression entailed by the fact of bringing analytic practice out into the wide open like this, by way of this form of bringing analysts out of their consulting rooms. A fact that is necessary to the survival of psychoanalysis. The RIPA (International Network for Applied Psychoanalysis) was remodelled during the PIPOL 3 encounter, under the direction of Hugo Francisco Freda. From now on it will constitute a European political force, which will articulate and consolidate this insertion of psychoanalysis into the social fabric, and will have to obtain funding by demonstrating the clinical efficacy of its practice.

The clinical issue

The operation of the CPCTs and institutions of Lacanian orientation is emphasising a contemporary approach to clinical work that has been practiced for a long time, but which has never been formulated with such force. The analyst behind the couch, deciphering the unconscious, playing with equivocation, the analyst who strives to loosen the hold of identifications, to isolate the object, to purify the symptom, and set the function of the subject supposed to know in motion, has certainly not disappeared. But he is not enough for us. Alongside him, we find an analyst who lends himself to conversation, even counsel, who helps the subject to cover the real with a symbolic or imaginary veil, who agrees to meet the subject without there being a true transference, who opens up the production of button ties and the construction of a symptom, to find out how he who finds himself all at sea might plug himself back in again. The principle, given by Jacques-Alain Miller in 1997, that there are no contraindications to meeting a psychoanalyst is to be seen in full application.1 This meeting has no predefined setting because, as Jacques-Alain Miller recalled, psychoanalysis does not stem from the setting but from the discourse. Appearances are deceptive! If the CPCT holds to the rules of non-payment and limited-duration treatment, this is nothing sacred, it is not an end in itself. Rather, what is involved is the widening of the possibilities of encounter, adapted to the contemporary subject, at a time when psychoanalysis has a reputation for being long, expensive and inefficient. This is the programme that suits our times. Tomorrow we shall maybe have to find other ways of breathing the Freudian spirit into our action.

The issue concerning the psychoanalyst’s training.

This new way of operating does not imply making any concessions on the ethic of the psychoanalyst’s training. Moreover, the Pass has enabled us to get to these new modalities of action, a point punctuated by Jacques-Alain Miller. The psychoanalysts of the Freudian Field have one foot in the social and the other in the WAP Schools which promote the Pass as the horizon necessary to the psychoanalyst’s training. The analyst in close touch with the social turns himself into the ‘practicable analyst’, as the ELP president Xavier Esqué has defined him.2 It is not about a ‘professional of the act’ whose coordinates would be given in advance, but ‘a polyvalent object, ready for use’, i.e., whose act is adapted to the particularity of each subject’s symptom. This ‘polyvalent object’ results from the application of one of the axioms established by Pierre-Gilles Guéguen in the opening to PIPOL 3: ‘For us, there is no pure gold of psychoanalysis and lead of applied psychoanalysis. Any operation of real applied psychoanalysis, as modest as it may be, is executed with pure gold’, i.e., based on a personal experience of analysis. The next PIPOL appointment, PIPOL 4, was announced by Jacques-Alain Miller for 11-12 July 2009 in Barcelona, under the title: ‘Un-integration: the Clinical Practice and Pragmatics of Un-integration in Psychoanalysis’.

PIPOL3 : Trois enjeux
